Die Gattung Cattleya Lindl. wurde vom englischen Botaniker und Orchidologen John Lindley (1799-1865) im Jahre 1824 begründet.
Er benannte die Gattung nach William Cattley (1788-1835). Cattley besaß eine Orchideensammlung die von Lindley katalogisiert und illustriert wurde.
John Lindley gilt als „Vater“ der modernen Orchideenforschung.
